Healing as a Property of Reality

Tuning Fork

Haiku:

Cleared aperture—

light dances through the void,

healing is the dance.

Profound Quote:

"Reality is not a thing to be mastered but a dance to be learned."

— Ammannuel Santa Anna, Living-Systems Developmental Theory

Parable: The River and the Stone

Long ago, in a valley where the river bent like a question, there was a stone—hard, unyielding—that had always been a stumbling block for travelers. The river flowed around it, but no one noticed its presence until someone tripped over it during a moonlit walk.

The traveler, bruised and frustrated, decided to remove the stone. Day after day, they chipped at it with hammer and chisel, their muscles aching, their patience wearing thin. Yet the stone remained, stubborn and unmoved.

One evening, as the traveler rested by the riverbank, they noticed something strange: the water, flowing gently over the stone, had worn away its edges just enough that the stone no longer jutted out. The river didn’t fight the stone—it simply found a way around it, softening its sharpness with patience and persistence.

When the traveler returned the next morning, they saw the stone was no longer an obstacle. It still sat there, but now it was part of the path, smoothed by the river’s touch. The traveler realized then that healing wasn’t about forcing change but about allowing reality—like the river—to do its work.

Structure & Technique: Clearing Apertures

Healing as a property of reality becomes accessible when we learn to clear apertures—spaces where new possibilities can flow without resistance. Here’s how:

  1. Pause: Create moments of stillness in group processes (e.g., silent reflection before meetings).
  2. Observe Patterns: Notice self-organizing patterns in groups (e.g., who steps into leadership naturally?).
  3. Surrender to Flow: Let go of rigid outcomes; trust the system’s intelligence.
  4. Play with Constraints: Experiment with boundaries (e.g., time, resources) to see what emerges.

These practices scale over time—from individual mindfulness to systemic change.

Luminous Definition

Luminous Definition: Aperture —

A cleared space in perception or structure where reality’s healing intelligence can flow unhindered. It is not an opening we create but one that reveals itself when resistance softens.

Three Appreciative Questions

  1. Start:

Where in your life have you seen healing arise without effort on your part?

  1. Middle (searing):

What if healing isn’t something you do but something that happens through you—when you stop fighting?

  1. End:

How might your work or facilitation shift if you trusted more in the river’s patience than your own hammer?

The Body: Healing as a Property of Reality

Healing is not an act of the self; it is a property of reality, like gravity or magnetism. It moves through cleared apertures—spaces where resistance softens and new forms can emerge without friction.

This aligns with complexity science’s principles: self-organization, dissipative structures, and autopoiesis [1]. Healing isn’t about fixing what’s broken but about creating conditions where the system (whether a person or a group) can rediscover its own balance. It is the fun within evolutionary intelligence—the third factor in emergent systems that people mistakenly call the "law of attraction" [2].

Traditions across the world are mirrors of this truth, each offering practices to clear apertures: meditation, ritual, dance, or even silence in a group meeting. The work isn’t about mastering these practices but about aligning with real complexity—letting go of control and allowing the cosmic (or the ridiculous) to emerge as play.

Rigorous Note:

This isn’t glib. Pain is real
