What can be said with reasonable confidence:

• Numerological systems have been developed independently across multiple cultures over thousands of years, suggesting that the intuition of qualitative significance in numbers is a widespread feature of human cognition.
• Individual numerological profiles, when calculated and interpreted with care, frequently generate insights that recipients experience as meaningful and accurate. This is well-documented anecdotally, though it has not been subjected to rigorous controlled studies.
• The Barnum effect (the tendency to accept vague, general statements as personally meaningful) is a real phenomenon and likely accounts for some portion of numerology's perceived accuracy. However, the specificity of some numerological insights — particularly those related to timing and developmental cycles — suggests that something beyond the Barnum effect may be at work.

What cannot currently be claimed:

• That numerological patterns have a causal mechanism that science has identified or can currently test.
• That numerological predictions are more accurate than chance in controlled experimental settings. (Very few such experiments have been conducted, and those that have been conducted have produced mixed results.)
