Appendix A — Measures and Rating Scales

Appendix A. Measures and Rating Scales.

Measures and rating scales.

Worksheets are clinical tools, not measurement instruments. When you need numbers that can be compared over time or communicated to another clinician, use validated measures. The following are the ones most relevant to the material in this book.

Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS). A short screening scale developed with the World Health Organization; the six-item screener performs adequately in general-population screening. Screening, not diagnosis.

Barkley Deficits in Executive Functioning Scale (BDEFS). Rating-scale assessment of executive function in daily life, with self- and other-report forms. Useful alongside Worksheet 2.1.

Rejection Sensitivity Questionnaire. The measure that operationalised rejection sensitivity as anxious expectation of rejection across situations. There is, as yet, no validated instrument for rejection sensitive dysphoria as a distinct entity.

Self-Compassion Scale. Measures kindness, common humanity, and mindful awareness toward the self; used in the ADHD studies cited throughout this book.

Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale and equivalents. Emotion-dysregulation measures are heterogeneous across the adult ADHD literature — a limitation the systematic reviews note explicitly. Choose one and stay with it rather than switching between instruments mid-course.

Valued Living Questionnaire. For the values work in the appreciative-inquiry questions and Worksheet 2.9.
