Exercise 3 — Rank four success conditions

The drill is ending your meetings on time. Rank these by how well each survives being graded by the person doing the grading, then say which two you would run together, and why.

1. The meeting felt tight.
2. I ended within two minutes of the scheduled end.
3. Nobody had to send a follow-up message to get what they came for.
4. I said "let's wrap" at the five-minute mark.

How to tell it's any good. If (1) is anywhere but last, you are grading with your feelings and everything downstream of this will fail quietly. If you chose a single condition rather than a pair, name the cheapest possible way to pass it and ask whether you would catch yourself doing that; (4) is passed by saying the words and continuing, and (2) is passed by cutting someone off mid-sentence. If your pair is (2) and (4), you have two behavior conditions and no guard on the thing the behavior was for. The principle to carry out of this one: measure the behavior, and separately measure what the behavior was supposed to protect, or you will optimize the measure.
