In which we discover that the body does not merely exist in time but actively keeps it — through the ancient languages of memory, anticipation, and biological rhythm — and that learning to read these languages is among the most profound acts of self-knowledge available to a human being.


The Orchestra You Did Not Know You Were Conducting

Close your eyes for a moment — if the setting permits — and place one hand on your chest.

Feel it. That rhythm. The steady, unasked-for percussion of your heartbeat. It has been playing since before you were born — since the cardiac cells of your embryonic body began their spontaneous electrical dance at roughly twenty-two days after conception. No one told those cells to start beating. No conductor raised a baton. They simply began, and they have not stopped since.

Now notice your breath. Unlike your heart, your breathing operates at the border of voluntary and involuntary control. You can hold your breath, deepen it, quicken it. But if you forget about it entirely — as you do for most of your waking life and all of your sleeping life — it continues without you. In and out. Rise and fall. A rhythm slower than your heartbeat but no less persistent.

Now, if you can, notice something subtler. A kind of background hum in your body — not any single sensation, but a general felt quality of aliveness. Perhaps there is warmth in your hands. Perhaps a subtle heaviness in your legs. Perhaps an almost imperceptible pulse of energy that seems to move, slowly, like a tide.

What you are noticing — however faintly — is your body keeping time.

Not clock time. Not calendar time. Not the abstract, mathematical time of Newton's Principia. But biological time — the layered, polyrhythmic, astonishingly complex temporal architecture that organizes every cell, every organ, every system in your body into a coherent living whole.

You are, at this very moment, an orchestra of clocks. Hundreds of them. Thousands, if you count at the cellular level. Each oscillating at its own frequency, each entrained to its neighbors, each contributing its voice to the vast temporal symphony that is you, alive, right now.

In Chapter 1, we established that the time your body lives in is not the time your clock measures. Now we go further. In this chapter, we will explore the body's own timekeeping systems — its memories, its anticipations, its biological rhythms — and discover that these are not mere background processes. They are the primary instruments through which you construct your experience of being a self in the world. Understanding them does not merely change your relationship with time. It changes your relationship with yourself.


Memory: The Body's Archive of Lived Time

We tend to think of memory as a mental phenomenon — a filing cabinet in the brain where past experiences are stored and occasionally retrieved. This is, at best, a partial truth. At worst, it is a fundamental misunderstanding that obscures one of the most important insights Temporal Somatics™ has to offer.

Memory lives in the body.

Not metaphorically. Not as a poetic flourish. Literally. The body stores temporal information in its tissues, its postures, its movement patterns, its autonomic responses, and its felt sense of what the world is like. And this embodied memory shapes your experience of the present moment — including your experience of time itself — far more profoundly than you may realize.

Procedural Memory: Time Written in Movement

Consider the act of riding a bicycle. You probably learned as a child, through a process of repeated attempts, falls, adjustments, and eventual mastery. If you have not ridden a bicycle in twenty years and someone offers you one today, your body will remember. Not your hippocampus — the brain structure involved in explicit, declarative memory — but your motor cortex, cerebellum, and basal ganglia. The knowledge is encoded not as a retrievable narrative ("First I grip the handlebars, then I push the right pedal...") but as a temporal pattern — a precisely sequenced cascade of muscular activations that unfolds in time.

This is procedural memory, and it is, at its core, a form of temporal memory. Your body remembers not just what to do but when to do it — the exact timing of the weight shift, the precise moment to adjust the steering, the rhythmic alternation of pressure between pedals. The body has memorized a temporal pattern and can reproduce it decades later with startling fidelity.

What is extraordinary about procedural memory is its temporal precision. A concert pianist executing a Chopin étude is not merely pressing the correct keys. The pianist is reproducing a temporal pattern with millisecond accuracy — each note arriving at precisely the right moment relative to every other note. The body has become, quite literally, a temporal instrument. It plays time.

The implications for Temporal Somatics™ are significant. Your body is not a passive vessel that exists in time. It is an active temporal agent that has been learning, storing, and reproducing temporal patterns since before you could speak. Every skill you have mastered, every habit you have formed, every routine you follow — all are temporal patterns encoded in the body. A musician who has spent decades training their temporal precision may experience time with a granularity that a non-musician does not. Somatic Memory: The Past Living in the Present

Beyond procedural memory, the body holds another form of temporal record — one that is more intimate, more complex, and often more consequential for our well-being.

When you experience a significant event — a moment of deep joy, a sudden fright, a profound loss, a tender touch — the body does not merely record the content of the experience. It records the somatic signature: the particular configuration of muscular tension, autonomic activation, breathing pattern, and visceral sensation that accompanied the event. This somatic signature is stored not in the brain's narrative memory systems but in the body's fascial tissue, muscular holding patterns, and autonomic nervous system calibrations.

This is why a particular smell can transport you, in an instant, to your grandmother's kitchen — not as an intellectual recollection but as a full-body experience, complete with the warmth in your chest, the relaxation in your shoulders, the subtle sweetness at the back of your throat. The smell triggered not a memory about the past but a memory of the past — an actual re-experiencing of the somatic signature associated with that time and place.

For many people, this embodied archive carries not only pleasant traces but also imprints of difficulty, stress, and trauma. The body that was once braced against a blow may carry that bracing decades later — a subtle, chronic tension in the shoulders or jaw that no amount of stretching fully resolves. The body that once froze in terror may retain a quality of immobility in certain situations — a felt sense of being stuck, unable to move, that has nothing to do with present circumstances and everything to do with a past that the body has never fully discharged.

Luminous Reflection: Your body is not merely in the present. It is a living archive of every significant temporal moment you have ever experienced. The tensions you carry, the postures you default to, the places where your breath catches or your gut tightens — these are not random. They are the body's way of remembering. And in remembering, they shape the temporal texture of your present moment.

This is why some people report that time feels "heavy" or "stuck" — as if the present were weighted with something they cannot name. In many cases, that weight is the accumulated somatic memory of unprocessed past experience. The body is living in two times at once: the clock time of the present and the felt time of the unresolved past. This double temporality creates a distinctive and often distressing quality of experience — a sense that time is simultaneously here and somewhere else.

The Predictive Body

Contemporary neuroscience has increasingly converged on what is called the predictive processing framework — the understanding that the brain (and, by extension, the body) is fundamentally a prediction machine. Rather than passively receiving sensory data and then responding to it, the brain is constantly generating predictions about what is about to happen — and then comparing those predictions against incoming data. What we experience as perception is not a direct readout of reality but a best guess, constantly updated by the gap between expectation and actuality.

This predictive process is profoundly temporal. The brain is not predicting what the world is but what it will be — in the next millisecond, the next second, the next few minutes. It is, in essence, a time machine — not in the science fiction sense, but in the precise sense that it is constantly projecting forward in time, modeling probable futures, and preparing the body to respond.

You can feel this predictive process at work in your own body. When you reach for a glass of water, your hand begins to shape itself to the glass before it arrives — the fingers spreading, the grip calibrating to the expected weight. If someone has secretly replaced the water with mercury (please do not try this), the glass will feel shockingly heavy — not because your muscles are weak but because your body's temporal prediction was violated. The body expected one future and encountered another, and the mismatch registers as surprise, disorientation, and a sudden spike of attentional intensity.

This is the body living ahead of itself. And it does so continuously, in domains far more consequential than reaching for water glasses.

Anticipatory Shapes: How the Body Models the Future

In Temporal Somatics™, we use the term anticipatory shape to describe the body's postural and physiological configuration in response to an expected future. This is not a conscious, deliberate process. It happens automatically, below the threshold of awareness, and it shapes your experience of the present moment more than you may appreciate.

Consider three different scenarios:

You are about to walk into a job interview that you believe will go badly. Notice what happens in your body — even in the imagining. The shoulders may tighten. The breath may shallow. The belly may contract. The jaw may clench. The body is already preparing for a threatening future — bracing, armoring, withdrawing energy from the periphery.

Now consider: you are about to meet a dear friend you have not seen in years. Notice the shift. The chest may open. The breath may deepen. There may be a softening in the face, a warmth in the hands, a subtle forward lean — as if the body is already reaching toward the anticipated joy.

And now consider: you are waiting for medical test results and have no idea what they will reveal. Notice the peculiar quality of not knowing. The body may oscillate — tightening then releasing, leaning forward then pulling back. There may be a queasy quality in the gut, a restlessness in the limbs. The body cannot settle because it cannot predict. It is suspended between futures.

These are anticipatory shapes. And they are not merely responses to anticipated futures — they are constitutive of how those futures feel. The body that has shaped itself in dread will experience the next hour very differently from the body that has shaped itself in eagerness, even if the external events are identical. Your anticipatory shape is not a reaction to the future. It is a partial creation of the future.

Ethical Caution: This insight can be misused. It does not mean that people are responsible for their suffering because they "anticipated" it. Many anticipatory shapes are formed by genuine past harm and operate below conscious control. Recognizing the body's anticipatory patterns is an act of compassion, not an invitation to blame. The goal is not to "think positive" but to become aware of the body's temporal orientation — and, where possible, to offer it new options.

The Temporal Horizon

One of the most distinctive features of an individual's temporal experience is what we call the temporal horizon — the distance into the future that the body habitually reaches.

Some people's bodies are oriented primarily toward the immediate next moment. Their temporal horizon is short — measured in minutes or hours. This is not inherently problematic; it is characteristic of present-centered awareness and can be associated with deep engagement and flow. But it can also be a sign of chronic threat-state: a nervous system that has learned, through repeated experience, that the future is unpredictable or dangerous, and that the safest strategy is to attend only to what is immediately at hand.

Other people's bodies reach much further into the future — days, months, years. They carry in their posture and their muscular tone a quality of reaching toward something distant. This can manifest as purposeful, goal-oriented energy. But it can also manifest as chronic tension — the body perpetually straining toward a future that never quite arrives, unable to rest in the present because the present is merely a way-station to somewhere else.

Neither orientation is right or wrong. But becoming aware of your body's habitual temporal horizon — and learning to expand or contract it intentionally — is one of the most powerful practices in the Temporal Somatics™ toolkit. Can you, right now, feel your body's orientation toward the future? Is it close and immediate? Distant and striving? Fuzzy and uncertain? Threatening? Inviting? Simply noticing — without judgment — begins the process of reclaiming temporal agency.


Biological Rhythm: The Body's Deep Song

Beneath memory and anticipation, beneath conscious experience altogether, the body keeps time through a profound system of biological rhythms — oscillations that organize life at every scale, from the millisecond firing of neurons to the annual rhythms of seasonal physiology.

Ultradian Rhythms: The 90-Minute Pulse

While circadian rhythms (the roughly 24-hour cycles discussed in Chapter 1) are the most widely known, they are only the outermost layer of the body's rhythmic architecture. Within each day, the body pulses through ultradian rhythms — shorter cycles that typically run between 90 and 120 minutes.

The sleep researcher Nathaniel Kleitman, who discovered REM sleep, proposed what he called the basic rest-activity cycle (BRAC) — the observation that the 90-minute REM cycles of sleep continue during waking hours as alternating periods of higher and lower arousal. During the "active" phase of the cycle, alertness, focus, and cognitive performance are elevated. During the "rest" phase, the body shifts toward parasympathetic dominance: attention wanders, drowsiness may arise, and the body quietly requests a pause.

Most of us override this cycle routinely — reaching for caffeine when the rest phase arrives, pushing through fatigue with willpower, scheduling meetings during our body's recovery periods. We treat the ultradian rest phase as an inconvenience rather than what it actually is: a biologically programmed renewal period that is essential for sustained performance, emotional regulation, and creative processing.

The somatic experience of ignoring ultradian rhythms is familiar to anyone who has ever pushed through an afternoon slump: a vague sense of forcing, a quality of effortful attention that feels fundamentally different from the natural, easeful focus of the active phase. The body is not being lazy. It is obeying a temporal program that is millions of years old. And when we chronically override it, the cumulative cost is not just fatigue but a kind of temporal dissonance — a perpetual, low-grade conflict between the body's time and the schedule's time that erodes vitality, creativity, and well-being.

The Luminous Practice: Working With Ultradian Rhythms

For one week, try this experiment: set a gentle alarm every 90 minutes during your workday. When it sounds, pause for three minutes. Close your eyes. Feel your body. Are you in the active phase (alert, focused, energized) or the rest phase (drifting, fatigued, scattered)? If you are in the rest phase, honor it — even briefly. Step outside. Gaze out a window. Take ten slow breaths. Stretch. You are not losing time. You are synchronizing with the body's temporal intelligence. And the active phase that follows will be richer for it.

Infradian Rhythms: The Longer Tides

Beyond the circadian and ultradian, the body also participates in infradian rhythms — cycles longer than 24 hours. The most well-known is the menstrual cycle, approximately 28 days, which orchestrates not only reproductive physiology but also significant shifts in energy, mood, cognitive style, and — crucially — temporal experience.

Research suggests that different phases of the menstrual cycle are associated with different qualities of temporal perception. The follicular phase (roughly the first two weeks) is often associated with higher energy, greater sociability, and a more future-oriented temporal stance. The luteal phase (the second two weeks) is often associated with increased interiority, heightened sensitivity, and a more present-centered or past-reflective temporal orientation. These are generalizations, of course, and individual variation is vast. But the principle is important: the body's temporal experience is not static. It oscillates with hormonal, seasonal, and developmental rhythms.

Seasonal rhythms — the body's response to changing day length, light quality, and temperature — also profoundly influence temporal experience. The phenomenon of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is the clinical edge of a far wider reality: that the body responds to the seasons with shifts in energy, sleep need, appetite, and mood that echo the ancient mammalian rhythms of activity and dormancy. In winter, the body's temporal grain may become slower, denser, more inward. In summer, faster, lighter, more expansive. Attending to these rhythms, rather than demanding that the body perform identically regardless of season, is a form of temporal wisdom that modern culture has largely forgotten — and that Temporal Somatics™ seeks to recover.

The Heartbeat: Time at the Core

Of all the body's rhythms, the heartbeat is the most primal and the most continuous. It is the first rhythm you ever experienced — the mother's heartbeat, heard in utero, establishing the foundational template for embodied time. And it is the rhythm that accompanies you until the last moment of your life.

What is less commonly appreciated is that the heartbeat is not metronomically regular. A healthy heart exhibits heart rate variability (HRV) — subtle, beat-to-beat fluctuations in the interval between heartbeats. These fluctuations are not random. They reflect the dynamic interplay between the sympathetic nervous system (which accelerates the heart) and the parasympathetic nervous system (which slows it). High HRV — greater variability — is associated with physiological resilience, emotional flexibility, and the capacity to adapt to changing demands. Low HRV — a more rigid, metronomic beat — is associated with chronic stress, anxiety, depression, and reduced adaptive capacity.

For Temporal Somatics™, HRV is a window into the body's temporal flexibility — its capacity to adjust its rhythms in response to conditions. A body with high HRV is a body that can speed up and slow down with ease, that can shift between states of activation and recovery without getting stuck. A body with low HRV is a body that has lost some of its temporal range — that is locked into a narrow band of rhythmic expression, unable to modulate freely.

The luminous insight here is this: temporal rigidity in the body mirrors temporal rigidity in experience. The person with chronically low HRV is often the person who reports feeling "stuck in time" — unable to relax, unable to fully engage, unable to feel the natural ebb and flow of energy that characterizes vibrant, embodied living. Conversely, practices that increase HRV — slow breathing, meditation, physical movement, positive social connection — also tend to restore the felt sense of temporal fluidity. Time begins to breathe again.

Appreciative Question: What if your body's rhythms are not obstacles to productivity but invitations to a more intelligent, more creative, more sustainable relationship with work and rest? What might change if you treated your ultradian dips not as weaknesses to overcome but as rhythmic wisdom to honor?

The Temporal Signature: Your Unique Pattern in Time

We arrive now at one of the central concepts of Temporal Somatics™: the temporal signature.

Just as every person has a unique fingerprint, every person has a unique temporal signature — a characteristic pattern of rhythmic preferences, temporal orientations, somatic memories, and anticipatory shapes that together constitute their embodied relationship with time.

Your temporal signature includes:

  • Your chronotype: whether your body's circadian rhythm tends toward morningness or eveningness, and the specific contours of your daily energy curve.
  • Your rhythmic entrainment style: how readily your body synchronizes with external rhythms (music, other people's energy, environmental tempo) and how strongly it maintains its own internal rhythms.
  • Your temporal horizon: whether your body habitually orients toward the immediate present, the near future, or the distant future.
  • Your somatic memory load: the degree to which your body carries unresolved past experience that colors present temporal perception.
  • Your anticipatory bias: whether your body's default anticipation of the future tends toward threat (bracing, contraction) or possibility (openness, reaching).
  • Your temporal flexibility: your body's capacity to shift between speeds, states, and rhythmic modes in response to changing conditions — reflected in measures like HRV and subjective reports of temporal fluidity.
  • Your relationship with stillness: whether the body can rest in non-doing without anxiety, or whether stillness triggers agitation, dissociation, or a panicked sense of wasted time.

No temporal signature is "better" or "worse" than another. Each represents the body's intelligent adaptation to the conditions of its life — its history, its temperament, its environment, its developmental stage. The goal of Temporal Somatics™ is not to produce a "correct" temporal signature but to bring awareness to the one you have, to understand how it was shaped, and to discover whether aspects of it still serve you — or whether some aspects, forged in conditions that no longer apply, might be ready for gentle renegotiation.

Mapping Your Temporal Signature

Consider spending a week as a curious observer of your own temporal patterns. Keep a simple journal — just a few notes, three times a day. Morning, midday, evening. Note:

  • Your energy level (high, medium, low)
  • Your temporal orientation (past-focused, present-focused, future-focused)
  • Your body quality (open/contracted, heavy/light, fast/slow)
  • Your felt relationship with time (spacious, rushed, stuck, flowing)

Over seven days, patterns will emerge. These patterns are the first sketch of your temporal signature. They are not problems to be solved. They are landscapes to be understood.

Interoception: The Sense That Senses Time

If the temporal signature is the what of the body's timekeeping, interoception is the how — the sensory channel through which the body's temporal information reaches awareness.

Interoception is the perception of the body's internal states — heartbeat, breath, gut sensations, temperature, muscle tension, hunger, thirst, pain. It is sometimes called the "eighth sense" (after the classical five plus vestibular and proprioceptive senses), and it is, arguably, the sense most relevant to Temporal Somatics™.

Here is why: time perception is deeply linked to interoceptive accuracy.

Research by Manos Tsakiris, Sarah Garfinkel, and others has demonstrated that individuals with higher interoceptive accuracy — a better ability to detect their own heartbeat, for example — tend to have more accurate time perception. They are better at estimating durations. They have a more refined sense of temporal passage. And they report a richer, more textured experience of time.

The explanation, though still debated, appears to involve the body's use of its own physiological signals as a kind of internal clock. Each heartbeat, each breath, each pulse of autonomic activity provides a temporal marker — a rhythmic signal that the brain can use, consciously or unconsciously, to track the passage of time. Individuals who are more attuned to these signals have access to a finer-grained temporal reference — and consequently, a more precise and more vivid temporal experience.

Conversely, individuals with poor interoceptive awareness — a difficulty sensing their own body — often report temporal difficulties: a vague sense of time passing without texture, difficulty estimating durations, a disconnected or "floaty" quality of temporal experience. This is not a cognitive deficit. It is a sensory deficit — a reduction in the body's temporal signal that leaves the brain with less information from which to construct temporal experience.

Interoceptive Training: Recovering the Body's Temporal Voice

The hopeful finding is that interoception is trainable. Studies have shown that practices emphasizing internal body awareness — mindfulness meditation, yoga, tai chi, somatic experiencing, body scan practices — can improve interoceptive accuracy over time. And as interoceptive accuracy improves, temporal experience changes with it. Time becomes more textured, more present, more real.

This is one of the central mechanisms through which Temporal Somatics™ produces its effects. By systematically training the body's capacity to sense itself, we are — quite literally — enhancing the body's ability to keep time. We are turning up the volume on the internal temporal signal, giving the brain more information from which to construct a rich and accurate experience of temporal flow.

The practice is remarkably simple in principle, though it requires patience and consistency:

  1. Sit quietly. No devices, no music, no directed activity.
  2. Turn attention inward. Not to thoughts but to sensations — heartbeat, breath, gut, temperature, tension, aliveness.
  3. Simply notice. Do not try to change anything. Do not label what you find as good or bad. Simply attend to the body's internal signals with the same quality of attention you would give to a beautiful piece of music.
  4. Stay with it. Even when — especially when — the signals seem faint, or nothing seems to be happening. The signals are always there. What is developing is your capacity to hear them.

Over time, something shifts. The body becomes more present. Not present in the mindfulness-app sense of the word — as a cognitive achievement — but present as a felt quality: a sense of being here, now, in this body, in this moment, with the full weight and richness of embodied existence.

And with that presence comes a different relationship with time. Not time as pressure. Not time as enemy. Not time as the thing that is always running out. But time as the medium of your aliveness — the substance in which you move and breathe and have your being.

Luminous Reflection: What if your body already knows how to be in time — and the only thing needed is for you to learn how to listen?

The Temporal Self: Where Memory, Anticipation, and Rhythm Converge

We have explored memory, anticipation, and biological rhythm as separate threads. But in the living body, they are never separate. They weave together, moment by moment, into what we might call the temporal self — the felt sense of being a continuous being with a past, a present, and a future.

This temporal self is not a fixed structure. It is a process — an ongoing, dynamic construction that the body performs in every waking moment (and, in dreams, in every sleeping moment as well). The temporal self is assembled from the somatic residue of past experience (memory), the bodily orientation toward what is coming (anticipation), the rhythmic substrate that gives time its texture (biological rhythm), and the interoceptive channel through which all of this becomes available to awareness.

When these streams are flowing freely and in relative harmony, the temporal self feels coherent. There is a felt sense of continuity — of being the same person who lived yesterday and will live tomorrow — and a sense of temporal flow — of time moving at a pace that feels natural and livable. This is what we might call temporal well-being: not the absence of time pressure or temporal difficulty, but the presence of a body that is in reasonably good relationship with its own temporality.

When these streams are disrupted — by trauma, chronic stress, illness, grief, or the relentless temporal pressure of modern life — the temporal self can fragment. Memory may intrude unbidden, flooding the present with the emotional intensity of the past. Anticipation may become chronic anxiety, the body perpetually braced for a catastrophe that never arrives. Biological rhythms may desynchronize, leaving the body jet-lagged in its own life. And interoception may dim, reducing the temporal self to a ghostly, thin experience — present in body but absent in felt aliveness.

Temporal Somatics™ works at this intersection. Its aim is not to "fix" time but to restore the body's capacity for temporal integration — the weaving of memory, anticipation, and rhythm into a coherent felt sense of being-in-time. This is not a luxury. It is, we believe, a fundamental dimension of human health, as important as physical fitness or emotional intelligence — and as amenable to cultivation.


Common Pitfalls in Working with the Body's Time

Before we close this chapter, a few cautions — offered not to dampen enthusiasm but to ensure that the work is approached with the respect it deserves.

Pitfall 1: Temporal perfectionism. The temptation to treat your temporal patterns as problems to be optimized. "If only I could be more present." "If only my circadian rhythm were better." This is the productivity mindset applied to the body's time, and it is a subtle form of violence. Your temporal signature is not a performance metric. It is a living adaptation. Approach it with curiosity, not correction.

Pitfall 2: Forcing somatic memory. The body releases its temporal holdings at its own pace. Pushing for faster processing, or trying to "dig up" traumatic memory, can be retraumatizing rather than healing. Always work within the body's window of tolerance. If somatic memory work feels overwhelming, slow down. Seek qualified professional support. The body's timing is not your enemy — it is its own form of wisdom.

Pitfall 3: Romanticizing "body time" at the expense of practical reality. Yes, the body has its own rhythms. But you also have a job, responsibilities, and a world that runs on clock time. Temporal Somatics™ does not ask you to abandon calendars and schedules. It asks you to develop a dual awareness — one that can honor the clock's demands and listen to the body's temporal intelligence. The art is in the dialogue between the two, not in the victory of one over the other.

Pitfall 4: Universalizing temporal experience. Different bodies, shaped by different histories, cultures, neurodivergences, and health conditions, have vastly different temporal experiences. What feels "normal" to you may be unrecognizable to someone else. Always hold your own temporal experience as one valid instance among many — never as the template against which others should be measured.


Somatic Practice: Meeting Your Body's Time

Time required: 15 minutes. Best done in a quiet, comfortable space.

  1. Lie down or sit in a supported position. Allow the body to be held — by the floor, the chair, gravity itself. Release any effort to hold yourself up.
  2. Close your eyes and take five slow breaths. Not deep breaths — slow breaths. Let the exhale be twice as long as the inhale. Notice the rhythm that emerges.
  3. Find your heartbeat. You may feel it in your chest, your throat, your fingertips, or your belly. If you cannot find it, rest your hand on your chest and feel for it. Once found, simply be with it. Do not count it. Do not judge it. Simply feel it.
  4. Now, ask the body: "What time is it in here?" Not clock time. Body time. Listen for whatever arises — an image, a sensation, a word, a felt quality. Perhaps it is "morning" even though it is evening. Perhaps it is "winter" even though it is summer. Perhaps it is "long ago" or "not yet." There is no wrong answer. The body is telling you where it lives in time.
  5. Ask a second question: "What does time feel like right now?" Heavy? Light? Rushing? Stagnant? Spacious? Compressed? Again, receive whatever comes without interpretation.
  6. Spend three to five minutes simply resting in whatever you have noticed. You are not trying to change it. You are accompanying it. This is perhaps the most radical temporal act available to you: to be with the body's time, as it is, without requiring it to be different.
  7. When you are ready, take three grounding breaths and gently open your eyes. Notice the room. Notice the clock, if there is one. Notice the difference between the time you just inhabited and the time on the wall. Both are real. You are learning to live in both.

The clock tells you what time it is. Your body tells you what time feels like.

Learning to listen to both — and to honor the wisdom of each — is the beginning of temporal literacy. And temporal literacy, as we will continue to discover, is one of the most consequential forms of intelligence a human being can cultivate.
