11. Timelines: Where the Past Is Kept

Ask someone where last Tuesday is and they will look at you as though you have made a category error. Time is not anywhere. It is a dimension, not a place; the question is malformed. Then, if you wait — and the waiting is the entire technique — most people will gesture. A hand moves, usually before the sentence does, and it moves somewhere specific: back over the left shoulder, out to the side, down and behind. The gesture arrives with a confidence that the verbal answer never has. Ask again about next spring and the hand goes somewhere else, and the two somewheres are not arbitrary with respect to each other. There is a geometry. The person has never inspected it, cannot describe it without prompting, and has been navigating by it their entire adult life.

This is not a claim NLP invented, and it is worth saying so immediately, because it is one of the few places where the field's intuition has been substantially corroborated by work done for entirely different reasons. Cognitive linguistics has documented spatial construal of time across languages for decades: English speakers put the future ahead and the past behind, and the metaphor is not decorative but structural — it licenses inferences, governs which prepositions are grammatical, and shows up in gesture that speakers do not know they are making. Mandarin speakers additionally use a vertical axis, with earlier events up. Aymara speakers in the Andes have been described as placing the known past in front and the unknown future behind, on the reasoning that what you have seen is what is visible. What all of this establishes is modest but real: temporal cognition recruits spatial representation, the mapping varies systematically, and it operates below the level of report. What it does not establish is that each individual carries a stable personal line with metric properties — that the January of 2019 sits at a measurable distance in a consistent direction — and you should hold that second claim as the field's extrapolation, not as an import from the literature. It is, in my experience, robustly elicitable. It has not been carefully tested for stability across sessions by anyone I can point you to. Teach it as what it is.

Eliciting the line without building it

The elicitation is where practitioners ruin the work, and they ruin it in the first sentence. Here is the ruined version: "As you think about that memory, notice where it is in space — is it behind you or off to your left?" You have now named two locations. Whatever the person reports afterward is a joint product of their geometry and your suggestion, and there is no way, from inside the session, to separate them. The client is cooperative, the request is ambiguous, and ambiguity plus cooperation reliably produces compliance dressed as discovery. This is not a subtle effect. It is the same demand characteristic that has contaminated a hundred years of introspective psychology, and the person sitting across from you is more suggestible than a laboratory participant, not less, because they came to you for help and have already granted you authority.

The clean elicitation is deliberately impoverished. Ask for a mundane, low-charge, repeated event — brushing teeth is the standard, and it is standard because nobody has feelings about it. "Think of brushing your teeth this morning." Pause. "Now think of brushing your teeth five years ago." Pause. "And brushing your teeth five years from now." Then, and only then: "If those three had a direction from each other, what's the direction?" The question names no locations. It offers no menu. It does not presuppose a line, only a relation, and if the person says the three are all in the same place and there is no direction, that is a finding and you write it down rather than fishing until you get the answer the model predicts.

Two things carry more information than the verbal answer. The first is gesture, which usually precedes speech and is worth trusting over it — David McNeill's work on gesture as a window into thinking is the general warrant here, and you can verify the specific case yourself in a morning of asking people. The second is latency. A fast, unhesitating placement is a report from an existing structure. A long pause followed by "I suppose it would be… over here?" is construction on the spot, and it is your fault, because you asked in a way that required construction.

The unmistakable tell that you have already contaminated the elicitation: the person's placement tracks your body. You leaned right, and the past went right. You gestured while asking and their line adopted your axis. Watch for this specifically. Ask with your hands still and your torso square, and if you notice mid-session that their geometry has migrated toward whatever you last indicated, the elicitation is void — not weakened, void — and the honest move is to say so and start again another day with a different opening question.

In-time and through-time, and what each one costs

Two broad configurations recur often enough to be worth naming. In the first, the line passes through the person: the future extends in front, the past runs behind, and the present is where they are standing. Call this in-time. In the second, the line lies outside the body — commonly left-to-right, sometimes an arc — so that past, present and future are all visible at once from a vantage point beside the sequence. Call this through-time. Mixed and idiosyncratic geometries are common; do not force a client into the taxonomy when they do not fit it, and do not treat the two-category scheme as anything more than a useful first sort.

The interesting content is the trade, and it is a genuine trade rather than a personality compliment. The in-time person is inside the moment they are in. Immersion is cheap for them; presence in a conversation, absorption in work, the capacity for an afternoon to become an unmeasured thing. The cost is arithmetic on duration. You cannot see a stretch of time you are standing in the middle of, and so the in-time person under-estimates how long the drive takes, arrives fourteen minutes late with a genuine and slightly wounded surprise, and discovers at nine at night that the thing due tomorrow has four hours in it and not the one they had somehow assumed. Their lateness is not disrespect and reading it as disrespect is a diagnostic failure; they are late because the future is in front of them, which is to say not visible as an extent.

The through-time person can see the extent. Sequence, duration, dependency, the shape of a quarter — all of it is laid out and countable, which is why through-time geometry is overrepresented in project managers, in surgeons, and in anyone whose competence consists of knowing what has to happen before what. The cost is exactly symmetrical. Standing beside your own life is a dissociated position, and a person who never steps into the line has trouble getting fully into an experience. The holiday is documented and scheduled and slightly unattended. Intimacy is difficult, because intimacy requires losing track of the next thing. And chronic mild dissociation is not merely an aesthetic loss — it is one of the things that keeps grief from finishing, because grief requires being in the moment you are avoiding.

Say all of that to a client and watch the recognition. Then say the part that matters: neither configuration is better, both are learnable, and a person who can step into the line for the conversation and beside it for the planning has a capacity that neither pure type has. That is the actual deliverable of this chapter's first half, and it requires no history work at all.

Association, dissociation, and moving a memory without touching it

Everything from chapter seven now applies with location as the driver. Associated means seeing through your own eyes, inside the experience, with the kinesthetic component live. Dissociated means seeing yourself in the picture from outside, with the feeling attenuated. The difference is not subtle and it is not merely metaphorical: the shift from associated to dissociated recall reliably reduces the intensity of the felt response, and you can measure it against the baseline you learned to take in chapter three. Test it on something trivial before you use it on anything that matters.

The manoeuvre this chapter contributes is relocation. A memory that sits close, or directly in the path ahead, or overhead, can be moved — pushed further back along the line, sized down, set beside the line rather than on it — and the state changes accordingly, often substantially, often within seconds. What you have done is alter a submodality whose parameter happens to be position in the temporal geometry. You have not, if you did it correctly, altered the content.

That last clause is the whole ethical load of the operation, so it needs a verification and not a hope. Before you move anything, have the person state three verifiable facts about the event in flat language — who was present, what was said, where it happened — and write them down verbatim. Move the memory. Then ask for the same three facts again, in the same flat language, and compare against what you wrote. If the facts are unchanged and only the intensity has moved, the operation did what it claimed. If a name has appeared that was not there before, or the reported room has changed, or the person now recalls something they did not report ten minutes ago and reports it with new confidence, stop. Do not continue and do not repair it by moving the memory back. You are outside your competence and the correct next move is the referral rule below.

Change personal history, and the reimprint

These are the two classical procedures. Both are constructions that place a resource into a past context, and both require every piece of scaffolding this book has built. Here is change personal history, in full.

Establish the baseline (chapter three), then find the recurring unwanted response — not the story, the response, and specifically its sensory signature. Ask what resource, in a single word or short phrase, would have made that context navigable: steadiness, adult perspective, the ability to leave the room. Now build the resource anchor exactly as chapter six specified, and note that chapter six revised the folk claim: one pairing is not enough. Elicit the resource state from a genuine memory in which the person actually had it, wait for the state to rise, set the anchor slightly before the peak, release before the decay, break state, test — and if the test does not reproduce a measurable portion of the state against baseline, build it again. Do not proceed on an untested anchor. An untested anchor is the single most common reason this procedure fails and then gets described as having worked.

Run the ecology check from chapter five before you touch the past, not after. Ask what the current response protects, what would be lost if it stopped, and who else is affected. If the answer is thin or arrives too fast, ask again in a different form. A response that has survived twenty years is doing something; find out what.

Then: with the anchor held, have the person view the earliest instance of the pattern from dissociated position — beside the line, seeing their younger self — and observe what that self needed. Fire the anchor. Have them notice how the scene proceeds differently with the resource present, still watching from outside. Then, and only if the ecology check was clean, allow them to step in and run it associated once, with the anchor held throughout.

Three verifications, all mandatory. One: re-elicit the original three factual details and compare them to what you wrote. Content must be intact; only response has moved. Two: break state fully — talk about something else for two minutes — then bring up the original context cold, without the anchor, and take a fresh baseline reading. If the shift only exists while the anchor is fired, you have a state-dependent effect and not a change. Three: future pace it, which is the next section, and if the future rehearsal produces an objection, the change is not ecological and you return to step three rather than pushing through.

The reimprint, associated with Robert Dilts, extends this by identifying a formative early experience, working with the significant others in that scene as well as the client's younger self, and building resources into the other people before the client re-enters the scene. It is the most powerful variant and the one I would advise most readers of this book never to run. It targets exactly the material — early, formative, involving caregivers, often incompletely remembered — where the objection in the next section has its full force. Know that it exists. Understand its logic. Do not be the person who first meets it in a weekend seminar and takes it home.

Future pacing, and the one place the evidence is strong

Take the well-formed outcome from chapter five — positively stated, self-initiated, contextualised, with sensory evidence of arrival — and place it on the line at the date it belongs. Then have the person step in and run it associated: what is seen, heard, felt at the moment of having it. Then have them turn and look back from that position toward now, and describe the steps that were taken. Not planned. Taken, in past tense, from the far end.

This is the technique in this chapter with the best independent support, and it is worth being precise about what supports it. The relevant literature is episodic future thinking — the finding that imagining a specific personal future event, in vivid detail and tagged to a date, changes present decision-making. Its most replicated effect is on delay discounting: the rate at which people devalue a reward because it arrives later. Participants cued to imagine a specific, personally relevant future event while making intertemporal choices discount future rewards less steeply than controls, and the effect has been extended to real-world behaviours including food intake and substance use. The mechanism proposed is that vivid episodic construction makes the future self less abstract, and there is converging neuroimaging work implicating overlapping hippocampal and prefrontal systems in remembering the past and imagining the future — the same machinery, run in two directions.

Note what that does and does not license. It supports vividness, specificity, sensory detail, and temporal tagging as active ingredients — precisely the components future pacing supplies. It does not license the claim that placing an image at a particular spatial coordinate is what does the work, and it does not license anyone's success-visualisation seminar. Grade it as: mechanism independently supported, technique consistent with the mechanism, specific spatial parameter untested.

Reconsolidation: the closest available mechanism, and where the analogy stops

The reason any of this is even conceivable rests on a finding from 2000. Nader, Schafe and LeDoux showed in rats that a consolidated fear memory, when reactivated by a reminder cue, becomes temporarily labile again — protein-synthesis inhibition in the amygdala after reactivation impaired the memory, which a fully consolidated trace should have resisted. Retrieval had returned it to a vulnerable state requiring restabilisation. The finding has been extended in humans through behavioural interference during the reconsolidation window, and clinical protocols built on the logic — notably Coherence Therapy's memory reconsolidation sequence, and reconsolidation-informed work on traumatic memory — take it as their explicit rationale.

The analogy to timeline work is real and it is limited, and the limits deserve full weight. What reconsolidation research supports: memory is not a fixed record, retrieval opens a window, and what happens in that window can change the trace. What it does not support: that the window is opened by any casual recall, that its parameters in humans resemble those in the rat amygdala, that the emotional response and the propositional content update together or separately in any way we can predict, or that a practitioner can tell from the outside whether a window is open. The clinical protocols that invoke reconsolidation specify a mismatch experience within a bounded time frame under conditions nobody in a coaching room is controlling. Cite the mechanism as the best available account of why altering a reactivated memory is possible at all. Do not cite it as evidence that your procedure did what you think it did.

The strongest objection in this book

Here it is at full strength, and I am not going to soften it.

Memory is reconstructive. It is not a recording retrieved but a representation rebuilt at the moment of asking, from partial traces, present expectations, and whatever the question implied. Elizabeth Loftus and colleagues spent decades demonstrating how easily the rebuild incorporates material that was never there — post-event information altering what witnesses report having seen, suggestive interviewing producing confident detailed recollections of childhood events that did not occur, and the resulting false memories reported with the same confidence, the same sensory richness, and the same emotional conviction as true ones. Confidence does not discriminate. Vividness does not discriminate. The feeling of remembering does not discriminate. There is no phenomenological marker available to the rememberer or the practitioner that separates a recovered memory from a manufactured one.

Now read the procedures above with that in hand. Change personal history deliberately reactivates an old memory, introduces new material into it, and rehearses the altered version until it feels settled. The reimprint does this with early childhood and with caregivers. Both are, structurally, the exact experimental paradigm that produces false memories — with the difference that the practitioner intends benefit, which is worth precisely nothing as a safeguard.

The case is not hypothetical. Through the late 1980s and 1990s, therapists working from the premise that traumatic memories are commonly repressed and recoverable used guided imagery, hypnosis, age regression and sustained suggestive questioning to help clients retrieve them. Clients did retrieve them — detailed, emotionally overwhelming accounts of childhood sexual abuse, and in a subset of cases, of organised satanic ritual abuse involving networks that investigation could never substantiate. Families were destroyed. Prosecutions were brought. A number of the clients later retracted, and some sued their therapists successfully. The professional bodies issued statements urging extreme caution about suggestive memory-recovery techniques, and the episode is now a standard case study in how a sincere clinical community can iatrogenically manufacture the suffering it set out to relieve. The practitioners were not cynics. They believed they were helping, they had a theory that made their method sensible, and the theory was wrong in a way their own procedures made invisible to them.

The turn is this, and it should be uncomfortable because it is not resolvable. The power of every technique in this chapter and its danger are not two properties in tension that a careful practitioner might trade off. They are one property. A memory retrieved is a memory rewritten — that is why moving it changes anything, and it is equally why moving it can install something that was never there. You cannot have the malleability without the vulnerability; they are the same fact stated twice. Which means there is no version of this work that is both potent and safe. There is only work that is potent and bounded — and the boundary is drawn by the practitioner's competence, never by the client's consent. Consent cannot function here. The client cannot consent to a risk whose realisation they will be unable to detect, and a person who has been given a false memory does not experience having been harmed; they experience having remembered. Every ordinary safeguard we use for risky interventions assumes the recipient can eventually tell. This one defeats that assumption at the root.

The constraint

So: what this work may be used for. Skill acquisition and rehearsal. Well-formed outcomes future-paced into the line. Geometry work — learning to step in and step out, correcting a chronic through-time dissociation or an in-time person's relationship to duration. Moving a memory's location to reduce intrusion where the content is fully known, corroborated, and undisputed by the client — a bad job interview, a botched presentation, an argument both parties agree happened. Dissociated review of ordinary unpleasant experience.

What it may not be used for. Anything where the content is uncertain. Anything where the client says they think something may have happened but cannot recall it. Anything involving a memory that has emerged during the work itself and was not present at intake — that is the alarm, and it means stop, not proceed carefully. Anything where a third party could be accused on the strength of what surfaces. Any deliberate attempt to recover a memory. And the reimprint, in any form, unless you hold a clinical licence, work under supervision, and can name the specific evidence base you are operating from.

The referral rule, without exception. Trauma goes to a licensed clinician trained in a trauma-specific modality. Not "trauma that seems severe." Trauma. If a client presents with post-traumatic symptoms, dissociative episodes, active suicidality, or a history of abuse, you refer, and you do it whether or not they want you to, whether or not they have been to three therapists already, and whether or not you feel confident. Your confidence is not evidence. The most dangerous practitioner in this field is the well-trained, well-intentioned one whose techniques work well enough often enough that they have stopped noticing where the edge is.

This week

Elicit your own line, and do it in the impoverished way — teeth, three times, hands still, and notice how fast the answer arrives. Find where the past sits, where the future goes, whether the thing runs through you or beside you. Then sit with the second question, which is the one nobody asks themselves: what has this geometry been costing me? If the future is in front and invisible as an extent, count the last five things you were late for and see whether the pattern is disrespect or arithmetic. If you have been standing beside your life in a tidy left-to-right, find the last experience you attended without fully entering, and let that be information rather than a verdict.

Then take one well-formed outcome from chapter five — one that passes every condition, not one you would like to pass them — and put it on the line where it belongs. Step in. Have it. Look back from there and tell yourself, in past tense, what was done. Step out, break state, and notice whether anything in you objected; if something did, the outcome was not as well-formed as you thought, and that is worth more than the rehearsal was.

And do no history work on yourself, alone, this week. Not the change personal history. Not a small one on something minor to see how it goes. The restriction is not caution about your fragility — it is the week's actual lesson, and it is this: the operation requires a second person because the verification requires a second person. You cannot check your own facts against your own record. The instrument that would detect the error is the instrument being altered. Sit with the discomfort of holding a technique you have understood completely and may not yet use, because that discomfort — the gap between comprehension and permission — is the thing that separates a practitioner from a convert, and this chapter is where you either acquire it or you don't.

Worked Examples — Chapter 11

Example 1: The Linear Chronology of Executive Decision-Making

Elias, a fifty-two-year-old logistics director, reports a specific physiological freeze when presented with quarterly targets. He describes the future as "a wall of gray static" and the past as "a long, straight corridor behind me." His timeline geometry is linear, extending forward from his left eye to his right, with the present located at his navel. The mechanism here is spatial anchoring: Elias has conflated temporal sequence with spatial distance. In standard linear timelines, the future is perceived as a singular, undifferentiated point of arrival rather than a field of possibilities. This creates urgency without agency because the target is fixed and distant, triggering a threat response (gray static) rather than a planning response.

To restructure this, we must shift from a linear projection to a panoramic field. We do not "move" Elias forward; we expand his coordinate system.

Step 1: Mapping the Current Geometry.

We ask Elias to close his eyes and identify the precise location of "Last Quarter’s Results." He points three feet behind his left shoulder. We ask for "Next Quarter’s Target." He stares at a point ten feet in front of his face, straining his neck. The mechanism of strain is clear: the visual axis is stretched beyond ergonomic comfort, creating somatic tension that mimics anxiety.

Step 2: Disrupting the Linear Axis.

We instruct Elias to keep his eyes closed but to move the "Past" location. Instead of keeping it behind him, we ask him to bring the past into a circle around his body at waist height. This is not metaphor; it is spatial re-anchoring. The past becomes peripheral data, accessible but not obstructive. We then ask him to locate the "Present" again. It remains at the navel, stable.

Step 3: Constructing the Panoramic Future.

We instruct Elias to place "Next Quarter’s Target" not in front of him, but to his right, at a comfortable arm’s length, and "The Quarter After" to his left. We expand this into a semi-circle ahead of him, from twenty degrees left to twenty degrees right. This creates a field of future possibilities rather than a tunnel vision toward a single point. The gray static dissolves because the visual field is no longer stretched; it is distributed.

Step 4: Integration and Test.

We ask Elias to walk through this new geometry. As he moves his head, he can see "Last Quarter’s Results" in his peripheral vision (peripheral processing allows for low-threat review) while focusing on "Next Quarter’s Target" directly ahead (focused planning). The urgency remains—targets are still future-dated—but the somatic marker shifts from tension to orientation. Elias reports a feeling of "space to breathe."

Failure Mode: This method assumes good binocular vision and spatial awareness. For individuals with vestibular disorders or severe dissociation, forcing a new spatial geometry can induce vertigo rather than clarity. In such cases, the timeline must remain anchored to a tactile surface (e.g., a table) rather than the internal space.


Example 2: The Circular Timeline of Creative Blockage

Sarah, a thirty-four-year-old architect, experiences creative block as a "looping door." She describes her past projects as spinning rapidly in front of her face, making it impossible to see new ideas. Her timeline is circular, counter-clockwise, with the past occupying the immediate forward space and the future trapped behind the spinning ring. The mechanism here is occlusion: the past physically blocks the line of sight to any potential future because the geometry forces a collision between remembered success/failure and prospective possibility.

The intervention requires breaking the loop by introducing a vertical dimension, transforming a 2D plane into a 3D sphere.

Step 1: Isolating the Spin.

We ask Sarah to identify which specific project is spinning fastest. She names "Project Alpha," completed two years ago. We locate this memory in her visual field: directly at eye level, rotating left. The speed is described as "dizzying."

Step 2: Introducing Verticality.

We instruct Sarah to take the memory of "Project Alpha" and move it down, below her knees. This removes it from the central visual axis. We then ask her to locate a neutral past event, such as "Yesterday’s Lunch," and place it above her head. The timeline is no longer a flat circle; it is now a vertical cylinder. The past is distributed vertically: recent past at eye level (accessible), distant past below (stable but less intrusive), and historical anchors above (distant).

Step 3: Re-mapping the Future.

With the central visual field cleared, we ask Sarah to locate "Next Week’s Sketch." She places it directly in front of her. But now, because the past is no longer spinning in her face, she can see this point clearly. We then expand the future into a cone extending from her eyes forward. The key is that the future is no longer behind the past; it is orthogonal to it.

Step 4: Stress Test.

We ask Sarah to recall "Project Alpha" again while simultaneously looking at "Next Week’s Sketch." Previously, this was impossible due to occlusion. Now, she can hold the memory in her lower visual field (affecting emotion but not vision) while focusing on the future point. She reports the spinning has slowed to a gentle drift. The blockage was not lack of ideas, but lack of spatial depth for those ideas to inhabit.

Failure Mode: This approach can lead to emotional detachment if the past is pushed too far away. If Sarah places all negative memories below her knees, she risks suppressing rather than processing them. The constraint is that the vertical axis must include meaning, not just distance. Negative memories must be visible, just not central.


Example 3: The Dual-Axis Timeline of Grief and Continuity

David, a sixty-year-old widower, describes his timeline as two parallel lines running side-by-side. On the left is "Life Before Elena" (gray, slow). On the right is "Life After Elena" (bright, fast). He feels he cannot step onto the right line because it feels like betrayal. The mechanism here is dualism: the timeline enforces a binary separation between past identity and future identity, creating a guilt-based freeze. The geometry dictates that to move forward is to leave the past behind entirely, which violates his loyalty structure.

The solution is not to merge the lines but to create a third axis: time as depth, where both lines exist simultaneously in a shared volume.

Step 1: Visualizing the Parallel Lines.

David places "Life Before Elena" on his left, extending backward into infinity. He places "Life After Elena" on his right, extending forward into infinity. The gap between them is described as "a canyon of silence." He cannot cross because there is no bridge.

Step 2: Introducing the Depth Axis.

We ask David to keep both lines where they are but to imagine a third line coming out from his chest toward us, representing his current breath. This is the axis of presence. We then ask him to place a memory of Elena’s laugh not on either line, but in the space between them and in front of him. This creates a triangular geometry: Past Left, Future Right, Present Center.

Step 3: Creating the Bridge.

We instruct David to take the memory of "Our First Date" (from the left line) and move it into the center triangle. Then, we take "My Hope for Next Year" (from the right line) and place it in the same triangle. The mechanism here is superposition: by placing distinct temporal data points in the same spatial location, we allow them to interact without conflict. The past does not block the future; they co-exist in the present moment.

Step 4: Expansion and Integration.

We expand the center triangle into a sphere around David’s head. All his memories are now inside this sphere. He can look left to see the past, right to see the future, but his core self is in the center of the sphere. The guilt dissolves because he is not leaving the past; he is carrying it within the same spatial volume as his future. He reports feeling "full" rather than "empty."

Failure Mode: This method can be overwhelming for individuals with high anxiety who feel their mind is already too crowded. Forcing multiple timelines into a single visual field can increase cognitive load. The constraint is that the sphere must remain semi-transparent; David must be able to look through the memories to see the world, not just stare at them.


Problems

Drill Problems (1-4)

  1. Define the term "spatial anchoring" in the context of timeline work and explain why it is necessary for disrupting automatic emotional responses.
  2. Map your own personal timeline. Locate your birth, your first day of school, a recent joy, and a recent regret. Describe the geometry (linear, circular, scattered, etc.) and the distance of each point from your body.
  3. Identify one memory in your timeline that is "spinning" or "vibrating." What is its color? Its speed? Move it to a location where it becomes still. Does its emotional charge change when its spatial position changes?
  4. Draw a diagram of the "Panoramic Future" geometry described in Example 1. Label the axes and indicate the field of view for planning versus the tunnel vision of linear urgency.

Application Problems (5-8)

  1. A client reports that their past is "in front of them," blocking their view of the future. This is a reversal of the typical linear timeline. What specific geometric intervention would you use to clear their visual field without dismissing the importance of their past?
  2. Design a timeline structure for a project team that needs to balance historical data (past) with innovation (future). How do you arrange these elements spatially to prevent "analysis paralysis" (too much past) and "reckless optimism" (too much future)?

Solution to 2: [Self-Assessment Required] The answer depends on the individual’s unique physiology. A common pattern is a linear timeline extending from the right shoulder (past) to the left hand (future). Variations include scattered points (for creative types) or concentric circles (for cyclical thinkers). The key is honesty in observation, not judgment of the geometry.

Solution to 3: Moving a spinning memory to a peripheral location reduces its impact because peripheral vision is processed by the magnocellular pathway, which detects motion but lacks detailed color and form resolution. This naturally dampens the emotional intensity. If the charge does not change, it suggests the issue is not sensory but narrative (the story told about the event).

Solution to 4: The diagram should show a semi-circle in front of the body, from left to right. The center is the "Present." Points to the immediate left and right are near-future events. Points further out are distant future events. The key distinction is that all points are at a similar distance (arm’s length), preventing tunnel vision.

Solution to 5: The intervention is to create a "window" in front of the person. Instead of moving the past behind them, we ask them to push the blocking memories to their left and right periphery, creating a clear corridor straight ahead. This respects the importance of the past (it is still in view) while clearing the path for the future.

Solution to 6: Use a "Wheel" geometry. Place the team in the center. Past data forms the inner ring (foundation). Future goals form the outer ring (horizon). Innovation is the space between the rings, accessible from all directions. This prevents analysis paralysis by keeping past data close but not central, and optimism grounded by its proximity to reality.

Solution to 7: Introduce scale and color. Larger, brighter objects are given more importance and clarity. Smaller, duller objects are background context. Distance is used to create hierarchy: near objects are actionable; far objects are aspirational. This creates structure without imposing a rigid line.

Solution to 8: The mechanism works because it removes the past from the central visual axis, reducing cognitive load and occlusion. The risk is emotional suppression. If the past is too far away, it becomes inaccessible for learning. The constraint is that the past must remain visible in the lower field, not invisible.

This honors ancestry (roots) without freezing the present, and allows for multiple futures (branches) without reckless optimism. It encodes a cultural bias toward interconnectedness rather than linear progress.
