Part III: Typological Assessment Domains

Part III: Typological Assessment Domains

These domains map the HORIZONTAL dimension — WHO someone is in terms of type, style, constitution, and archetypal pattern. Type is distinct from stage: type describes HOW someone engages, stage describes HOW MUCH complexity they bring to it.

A note on the beauty of type: If stage models answer "how far has this person developed?" then typological models answer the equally important and infinitely more colorful question: "Who IS this person?" What is their flavor? Their music? Their signature way of touching life and being touched by it?
Stage development without type awareness produces cookie-cutter humans — everyone aiming for the same "highest" stage with no appreciation for the irreplaceable uniqueness of each soul. Type awareness without stage development produces people who use "I'm just a Seven" or "that's my Ni" as an excuse to stop growing. The Luminous synthesis holds both: you are a unique type, AND you are a developing being. Your type is your instrument. Your stage is how skillfully you play it. And the music? The music is yours alone — no one in the history of consciousness has ever played your particular instrument at your particular stage in your particular way. That's not a flattering statement. It's a cosmological fact.
The six typological domains that follow are an invitation to fall in love with the particular. With THIS person. With THEIR way of being alive. With the unrepeatable miracle of a human being who was never supposed to be anyone other than exactly who they are.

9. Enneagram Type Pattern

Source: Luminous Enneagram™ · Core (Required)

The Invitation: The Enneagram is not a personality test. It is a mirror of the soul's strategy for surviving a world that didn't fully see its gift. Each of the nine types represents a magnificent intelligence that got conscripted into survival — a genius that became a fixation, a gift that became a trap, a sacred capacity that narrowed into a compulsion. The Sacred Perfectionist's integrity became rigid criticism. The Sacred Giver's generosity became codependency. The Sacred Achiever's excellence became image management. And so on, nine times, each one heartbreaking and each one beautiful.

The Luminous Enneagram assessment doesn't just identify type — it reveals the sacred gift hiding inside the fixation, the body that carries the type pattern, the parts constellation that maintains it, and the developmental trajectory that transforms it. Because your type doesn't change. But how you wear it changes everything.

What to Evaluate:

  • Core Type with Luminous Gift Name™ — The Nine Sacred Intelligences: Each type is named for its gift, not its pathology. This is not cosmetic — it shapes the entire assessment orientation:
  • 1 — The Sacred Perfectionist: The gift of integrity — the capacity to perceive what's right, what could be better, what deserves refinement. When healthy: moral precision, ethical clarity, the beauty of things done well. When fixated: relentless self-criticism, rigidity, the belief that goodness requires perfection. Somatic home: tension in jaw, spine, and hands (holding everything "right"). Eros expression: the erotic dimension of precision — the pleasure of alignment, the sensual satisfaction of integrity.
  • 2 — The Sacred Giver: The gift of attunement — the capacity to feel what others need and offer exactly that. When healthy: genuine warmth, relational intelligence, the beauty of being seen by someone who truly sees. When fixated: compulsive giving to earn love, loss of self in other, the belief that love requires sacrifice. Somatic home: arms reaching outward, chest open but belly contracted (giving from a place of hidden emptiness). Eros expression: relational eros — the pleasure of deep connection, the sensual warmth of being needed and needed.
  • 3 — The Sacred Achiever: The gift of excellence — the capacity to manifest vision into reality with breathtaking effectiveness. When healthy: inspiration, leadership, the beauty of something accomplished brilliantly. When fixated: image management, workaholism, the belief that worth requires achievement. Somatic home: forward-leaning, driven chest energy, compressed breathing (going somewhere). Eros expression: the eros of creation — the pleasure of bringing something magnificent into being, the sensual satisfaction of mastery.
  • 4 — The Sacred Individualist: The gift of depth — the capacity to inhabit the full range of human emotion and extract beauty from everything, including suffering. When healthy: authenticity, aesthetic intelligence, the beauty of a life lived at full emotional volume. When fixated: self-absorption, envy, the belief that meaning requires suffering. Somatic home: heart area — chest may feel hollow or aching, longing quality in the arms and eyes. Eros expression: aesthetic eros — the pleasure of beauty in all its forms, the sensual depth of fully felt emotion.
  • 5 — The Sacred Observer: The gift of wisdom — the capacity to see deeply, think originally, and understand what others miss. When healthy: penetrating insight, innovative thinking, the beauty of a mind fully engaged with mystery. When fixated: withdrawal, avarice with energy and information, the belief that safety requires separation. Somatic home: pulled inward, energy concentrated behind the eyes, minimal body (trying to take up less space). Eros expression: intellectual eros — the pleasure of understanding, the sensual thrill of an insight that rearranges everything.
  • 6 — The Sacred Loyalist: The gift of courage — the capacity to face fear directly, build trust, and create genuine safety for self and others. When healthy: steadfast loyalty, vigilant protection, the beauty of someone who shows up in the storm. When fixated: anxiety, doubt, scanning for danger, the belief that trust must be endlessly tested. Somatic home: eyes scanning, jaw slightly set, body braced for impact (the posture of vigilance). Eros expression: the eros of trust — the profound pleasure of finally feeling safe, the sensual relief of letting one's guard down.
  • 7 — The Sacred Enthusiast: The gift of joy — the capacity to find possibility, pleasure, and creative vision in every situation. When healthy: infectious enthusiasm, visionary thinking, the beauty of a life fully savored. When fixated: escapism, gluttony for experience, the belief that limitation equals pain. Somatic home: energy moving upward and outward, bright eyes, restless limbs, breath in the upper chest (trying to stay above the pain). Eros expression: eros itself in its most visible form — the pleasure of pleasure, the sensual delight of being alive, the joyful play of a consciousness enchanted by its own creativity.
  • 8 — The Sacred Challenger: The gift of power — the capacity to protect the vulnerable, speak truth to authority, and move through the world with sovereign force. When healthy: fierce protection, gutsy truth-telling, the beauty of someone who will not be moved. When fixated: domination, vengeance, the belief that vulnerability equals death. Somatic home: wide stance, powerful chest, strong jaw, energy filling the room (the posture of dominance). Eros expression: the eros of power — the pleasure of strength, the sensual force of embodied authority, the fierce tenderness of a protector.
  • 9 — The Sacred Peacemaker: The gift of harmony — the capacity to hold space for everyone, see all perspectives, and create unity from difference. When healthy: inclusivity, mediating presence, the beauty of someone in whom everyone feels welcome. When fixated: self-forgetting, merge, the belief that peace requires the erasure of self. Somatic home: diffuse energy, soft edges, slightly unfocused presence (trying to be everywhere and nowhere). Eros expression: the eros of union — the pleasure of oneness, the sensual merging of separate into whole, the gentle bliss of dissolution.
  • Wing Influence — The Flavor Within the Flavor: Which adjacent type colors the primary type expression? A 4w3 (Individualist with Achiever wing) creates beauty that the world can see. A 4w5 (Individualist with Observer wing) creates beauty that may stay hidden. The wing adds nuance — and in the Luminous system, it also adds a second somatic pattern, a second parts configuration, and a second eros flavor.
  • Instinctual Variant — The Three Bodies of Desire: This is the Enneagram's most underappreciated dimension — and it's where eros lives most directly:
  • Self-Preservation (SP): Desire organized around safety, comfort, resources, body, health, home. The eros of nesting — the pleasure of a warm room, a good meal, a healthy body, financial security.
  • Social (SO): Desire organized around belonging, status, contribution, community, recognition. The eros of belonging — the pleasure of being valued by the group, contributing meaningfully, being seen in your role.
  • Sexual/One-to-One (SX): Desire organized around intensity, fusion, chemistry, transmission, magnetism. The eros of union — the pleasure of being completely consumed by another, by a creative project, by a transcendent experience. This is eros in its most raw and visible form.
  • Stacking order matters enormously. Someone's blind instinct (the one at the bottom of the stack) is often the source of their greatest suffering and their most compressed gifts. An SP-blind Type 7 may have incredible adventures but can't keep a home. An SX-blind Type 5 may have extraordinary ideas but can't feel passion. The blind instinct is developmental gold.
  • Integration/Disintegration Direction — The Growth and Stress Arrows: The Enneagram's arrows are not just stress and security points — they are developmental pathways. Moving to the integration point accesses new capacities. Moving to the disintegration point reveals what happens when the fixation collapses. Both movements are informational — and in the Luminous system, both are assessed somatically (what happens in the body during integration vs. disintegration?).
  • Type × Stage Interaction™ — The Most Important Enneagram Innovation: This is where the Enneagram becomes truly three-dimensional. The same type looks radically different at different developmental stages:
  • A Type 8 at Blue (Spiral): authoritarian, my-way-or-the-highway, righteous power
  • A Type 8 at Orange: competitive, strategic, power for achievement
  • A Type 8 at Green: passionate advocate, protective of the marginalized, power for justice
  • A Type 8 at Yellow: systemic power — seeing and influencing whole systems, power as service
  • A Type 8 at Turquoise: cosmic power — aligned with the force of evolution itself, power as surrender
  • This means you cannot assess Enneagram type without simultaneously assessing developmental stage. The type stays the same. The stage changes everything about how it expresses.
  • Somatic Type Pattern — The Body of Each Type: Each Enneagram type has a characteristic body signature that is as reliable as the psychological pattern:
  • Type 1: Tension in jaw and spine. Holding everything upright. Slight rigidity. The body of someone who is TRYING TO GET IT RIGHT.
  • Type 2: Arms reaching, chest open, eyes on others. The body of someone who is ATTENDING TO YOU.
  • Type 3: Forward-leaning, polished, efficient movement. The body of someone who is PERFORMING.
  • Type 4: Dramatic, fluid, sometimes heavy. Heart area prominent. The body of someone who is FEELING EVERYTHING.
  • Type 5: Pulled inward, minimal, economical. The body of someone who is CONSERVING.
  • Type 6: Scanning, slightly braced, vigilant. The body of someone who is WATCHING FOR DANGER.
  • Type 7: Animated, upward energy, restless. The body of someone who is ALREADY SOMEWHERE ELSE.
  • Type 8: Wide, grounded, powerful, space-filling. The body of someone who WILL NOT BE MOVED.
  • Type 9: Diffuse, soft, settled, blending. The body of someone who is EVERYWHERE AND NOWHERE.
  • Gift-Shadow Integration Status: Where the type's greatest gift has become its greatest trap. The One's integrity becomes criticism. The Two's generosity becomes manipulation. The Three's excellence becomes performance. Where exactly is this person on the gift-shadow continuum? And what would it take for the fixation to relax enough for the sacred gift to express freely?
  • Type-Parts Correlation™ — The Inner Family of Each Type: Each Enneagram type has a characteristic IFS parts configuration:
  • Type 1: Powerful inner critic manager, compliance exile, spontaneity Luminary
  • Type 2: Strong caretaker manager, neediness exile, authentic-need Luminary
  • Type 3: Achievement manager, worthlessness exile, being-enough Luminary
  • Type 4: Specialness manager, ordinariness exile, joy-in-the-ordinary Luminary
  • Type 5: Intellectual withdrawal manager, overwhelm exile, full-engagement Luminary
  • Type 6: Vigilance manager, trust exile, courage Luminary
  • Type 7: Positivity manager, pain exile, depth-in-stillness Luminary
  • Type 8: Power/protector firefighter, vulnerability exile, tender-strength Luminary
  • Type 9: Merging manager, anger exile, self-assertion Luminary
  • Three Centers of Intelligence Balance: Gut (8,9,1), Heart (2,3,4), Head (5,6,7) — which centers are dominant, auxiliary, and repressed? The repressed center is often the source of the deepest developmental potential. A Heart type with a repressed Gut center needs to find their anger. A Head type with a repressed Heart center needs to find their grief. The repressed center is always where the most compressed gifts live.

Material Indicators — What to Listen and Watch For:

  • Core motivation and fear patterns — what drives them at the deepest level, and what do they avoid at any cost?
  • Somatic type signatures (see above) — the body never lies about type
  • Attention patterns — what they automatically notice and what they systematically miss (Type 1 sees what's wrong; Type 7 sees what's possible; Type 5 sees what's interesting; Type 9 sees what everyone else sees)
  • Communication style and relational patterns — how they connect, how they distance, how they create safety
  • Stress and growth behaviors — the arrows in real time
  • Where they feel most alive vs. most stuck — aliveness points toward the gift, stuckness points toward the fixation
  • The eros tell: What do they desire most deeply? Not what they think they should want, but what makes their eyes light up, their body lean forward, their breath quicken? The core desire reveals the type more reliably than any questionnaire.

The Luminous Difference: Standard Enneagram assessment identifies type, wing, and instinctual variant. Luminous Enneagram adds: Sacred Gift Names™ (reframing each type as a sacred intelligence), Type × Stage Interaction™ (the same type at different developmental stages is a fundamentally different expression), Somatic Type Patterns (each type has a body), Type-Parts Correlation™ (each type has a characteristic inner family), Instinctual Variant as Eros Map (the three instincts are three flavors of desire), and the erotic dimension of each type — because every type, at its core, is a unique way of wanting. And wanting — desire — eros — is not the enemy of spiritual development. It is its fuel.

Practitioner's Feel: When you're assessing the Enneagram well, you feel like a portraitist who has fallen a little bit in love with their subject. Each type is so particular, so beautifully specific in its way of touching the world. You see the Type 4's exquisite sensitivity and want to weep. You see the Type 8's fierce protectiveness and want to cheer. You see the Type 9's spacious inclusivity and want to rest. Your job is to see the sacred gift so clearly that the person in front of you can see it too — and in that seeing, the fixation begins, just a little, to let go.

10. Cognitive Style Profile

Source: Luminous Cognitive Styles™ (MBTI / Jung) · Extended (Recommended)

The Invitation: If the Enneagram maps the heart's strategy (what you want and what you fear), cognitive styles map the mind's architecture (how you naturally process, create, and communicate). Jung's eight cognitive functions describe eight genuinely different ways of touching reality with consciousness — and every person uses all eight, but in a specific hierarchy that shapes everything from how they solve problems to how they fall in love to how they process grief.

The beauty of cognitive style assessment is that it explains translation gaps — why two brilliant people can talk past each other completely. An Ni-dominant (Introverted Intuition) communicates in symbols, archetypes, and future-oriented patterns. An Se-dominant (Extraverted Sensing) communicates in concrete, present-moment, sensory detail. Neither is smarter. They're just running different cognitive operating systems. And when they learn to translate, the creative synergy is extraordinary.

What to Evaluate:

  • Dominant/Auxiliary/Tertiary/Inferior Function Stack: The full cognitive hierarchy across 8 Jungian functions:
  • Perceiving functions (how you take in information):
  • Se (Extraverted Sensing): Concrete, present-moment, sensory awareness. The world as it IS, right now, in vivid detail. In the body: skin alive, senses wide open, fully here.
  • Si (Introverted Sensing): Internal sensory memory, tradition, stability, detailed recall. The world as it WAS and should reliably continue to be. In the body: settled, familiar, organized around known patterns.
  • Ne (Extraverted Intuition): Possibility perception, brainstorming, connection-making, the electric leap between ideas. The world as it COULD BE. In the body: buzzing, excited, ideas generating faster than words can follow.
  • Ni (Introverted Intuition): Deep pattern recognition, vision, symbolic thinking, the quiet knowing that arises from the unconscious. The world as it WILL BE. In the body: energy deep in the belly or behind the eyes, a pull toward something not yet manifest.
  • Judging functions (how you make decisions):
  • Te (Extraverted Thinking): Organizational logic, efficiency, systems optimization, measurable results. Decides based on: what WORKS. In the body: directed, purposeful, linear energy.
  • Ti (Introverted Thinking): Internal logical frameworks, categorical precision, theoretical elegance. Decides based on: what's TRUE. In the body: concentrated, behind-the-eyes, refining energy.
  • Fe (Extraverted Feeling): Social harmony, group values, emotional atmosphere, interpersonal connection. Decides based on: what's GOOD FOR US. In the body: heart-centered, attuned to others, facial muscles mirroring.
  • Fi (Introverted Feeling): Deep personal values, authenticity, individual meaning, moral compass. Decides based on: what's RIGHT FOR ME. In the body: centered in the heart, quiet intensity, unwavering.
  • Cognitive Style × Developmental Stage Interaction™: The same function stack looks radically different at different developmental stages:
  • An INTJ (Ni-Te) at Order 3: Uses intuitive insight to fit in better. Ni serves belonging.
  • An INTJ at Order 4: Uses Ni-Te to build systems and achieve vision. Ni serves self-authoring.
  • An INTJ at Order 5: Uses Ni-Te to see through all systems, including their own. Ni becomes transparent to itself.
  • The function stack stays the same. What it serves changes with development.
  • Somatic Cognitive Mapping™ — Where the Functions Live in the Body:
  • Se: Skin, senses, peripheral nervous system — the body's surface
  • Si: Internal organs, gut, musculoskeletal memory — the body's interior
  • Ne: Upper head, eyes darting, restless energy — the body reaching outward toward possibility
  • Ni: Deep belly, third eye area, stillness — the body receiving from within
  • Te: Hands, jaw, directed forward motion — the body organizing
  • Ti: Behind the eyes, temples, quiet concentration — the body thinking
  • Fe: Heart, face, arms, social muscles — the body connecting
  • Fi: Deep heart, center chest, quiet core — the body knowing its own truth
  • Shadow Function Integration Status — The Gift in the Basement: The inferior function (the opposite of the dominant) is the source of both the greatest vulnerability AND the greatest developmental potential. It's the function that feels awkward, overwhelming, or threatening — and it's the one that, when integrated, creates the most profound transformation:
  • An Ni-dominant who integrates Se becomes a visionary who can inhabit the present moment
  • An Fe-dominant who integrates Ti becomes a connector who can think with crystalline independence
  • An Se-dominant who integrates Ni becomes a presence master who can sense the future
  • The inferior function is the Luminary of the cognitive system — it carries compressed gifts that, once liberated, complete the personality.
  • Temporal Cognitive Style™: Each function has a characteristic relationship to time:
  • Si = the past ("remember when...")
  • Se = the present ("look at this NOW")
  • Ni = the future ("I see where this is going")
  • Ne = possibility space ("what if...?")
  • The temporal orientation of the dominant function shapes the person's entire relationship to time, which connects directly to Temporal Somatics.

Material Indicators — What to Listen and Watch For:

  • How they naturally process information — do they jump to possibilities (Ne), recall details (Si), synthesize patterns (Ni), or engage the senses (Se)?
  • Problem-solving approach: systematic analysis (Ti/Te), values check (Fi/Fe), brainstorm (Ne), or recall precedent (Si)?
  • Communication style: abstract and metaphorical (Ni/Ne) vs. concrete and specific (Si/Se)?
  • Somatic activation during function use — energy rising to the head (thinking functions), spreading to the heart (feeling functions), or reaching through the senses (sensing functions)
  • Where they feel effortless cognitive flow vs. where thinking feels hard — the flow zone reveals the dominant function; the hard zone reveals the inferior
  • Translation gaps in relationships: Misunderstandings that aren't about intelligence or goodwill but about genuinely different cognitive architectures. An Se and an Ni literally see different worlds — and helping them translate is one of the most powerful interventions available.

The Luminous Difference: Standard MBTI assessment sorts people into 16 types. Luminous Cognitive Styles adds: Somatic Cognitive Mapping™ (each function lives in a specific body region), Cognitive Style × Stage Interaction™ (the same type at different developmental stages operates completely differently), Shadow Function as Luminary (the inferior function carries the most compressed developmental gifts), Temporal Cognitive Style™ (function-based time orientation), and the erotic dimension of cognition — because thinking itself is erotic when it's alive. The pleasure of a good idea. The thrill of an unexpected connection. The sensual satisfaction of an elegant logical framework. Cognition, fully alive, IS eros in the realm of mind.

Practitioner's Feel: When you're assessing cognitive style well, you feel like a translator between languages that most people don't even know they're speaking. You can hear the Ni underneath the words that sound vague to everyone else. You can see the Te structure underneath what looks like cold efficiency. And when you help someone understand their own cognitive architecture — and the architecture of the people they love — whole relationships transform. "They're not being difficult. They're thinking in a different language." That realization is worth the entire assessment.
