6. Developmental Roots: How the Threat Loop Gets Wired
The neurobiological substrate of RSD is not purely constitutional. While genetic factors in dopaminergic and noradrenergic sensitivity appear relevant, the calibration of the rejection-sensitivity system is substantially shaped by developmental experience.6 Early experiences of relational unpredictability, criticism, or exclusion teach the developing nervous system that the social environment is dangerous. Over time, the threshold for threat detection is lowered. The gain is turned up. What began as an adaptive calibration to a genuinely difficult relational environment becomes, in adulthood, a hair-trigger that fires in conditions that no longer warrant it.
Attachment theory provides a complementary lens. Early relational experiences create internal working models — implicit, neurally encoded templates for anticipating how others will respond to bids for connection. These encodings are not primarily cognitive; they are subcortical, somatic, and procedural — stored in the body and in implicit memory systems that operate below conscious access.11 This is part of why RSD is so resistant to purely cognitive interventions: the encoding being addressed is not, at its root, a thought. It is a body memory, a survival program.
