7. The Strengths Side of the Equation: Sensitivity as a Calibrated Instrument
Any clinically complete account of RSD must resist the pull toward pure pathologizing. The same architecture that generates the acute suffering of RSD episodes also underlies capacities that, in contexts of safety and adequate regulation, represent genuine gifts.
The Same Instrument
The capacity to detect the microsecond a conversation shifts from openness to guardedness is not a compensation for suffering.9 It is the same finely calibrated relational instrument that, under threat, becomes an alarm. The difference is not the instrument. It is the conditions under which it is operating.
Reframing sensitivity as a calibrated instrument rather than a defect has neuroplastic implications. Shame about one’s own emotional intensity activates the threat-response system and impairs the prefrontal regulation that might otherwise modulate the RSD response. Compassionate recognition of the same trait as a feature of a highly tuned system — one that needs adequate regulation, not elimination — reduces threat activation and creates the conditions under which prefrontal engagement becomes possible.
